LED Replacement for Halogen Outdoor Flood Light
A prominent New York City private school replaced its 150W halogen exterior light fixtures, pictured at left, with new 50W Philips Color Kinetics eW Blast Powercore flood light fixtures, pictured at right. The school got a dramatic increase in light, with 100W of energy savings, as well as terrific maintenance cost savings.

LED General Office Lighting
LED light fixtures for general office lighting are viable, and they include some advanced features including control via handheld remote or wallbox unit, dimming, color temperature changing, networking and more. Dimming the fixtures down all the way and selecting the warmest 2700 Kelvin color temperature allows the creation of an ambiance suitable for fine dining, while increasing light levels and shifting the color temperature to a cooler setting, (up to 6300 Kelvin if desired), makes the lighting suitable for general office use. Broadway Theater LED Lighting
I was thrilled to see how the Philips Color Kinetics LED eW Cove QLX Powercore products were put to use at the Belasco Theatre on Broadway. The eW Cove fixtures were placed behind decorative stained glass column capitals and inside the accompanying stained glass light fixtures pictured below. The warm white 2700 Kelvin color temperature LED light source mimics the appearance of incandescent light, yet will use a fraction of the energy of incandescent bulbs, and require no maintenance for a very, very long time to come. Best of all, the theater's advanced stage dimming system integrated perfectly with these LEDs, and they dim in a perfect linear manner. Bravo Belasco Theatre!!

LED MR16 Lumen Depreciation
We tested LED MR16 bulbs, and found that many have acceptable performance when first installed, but suffer from very severe lumen depreciation and color temperature shift over time. For example in the photos below, we compared two identical 6W MR16 LED light bulbs. The image at left features a brand new light bulb, and the image at right features its twin, after one month of constant operation. The results are shocking. This product lost nearly 50 percent of its lumen output, and its color temperature has shifted noticeably. 


The foot candle meter was positioned 18 inches from the light fixture. Neither the light fixture nor the position of the meter were moved in the process of switching from new bulb to used bulb.

Retrofitting T12 Parabolic Fixtures with Lithonia 2RT5R Relight Kits
The photo below says is all. The fixture on the left is a typical deep cell parabolic fixture with three T12 34W fluorescent bulbs and the fixture at the right is a similar fixture, after it has been gutted and retrofitted with a new Lithonia 2RT5R Relight kit with 4100K 28W T5 lamps. Wattage consumption dropped by nearly 50 percent, and light levels increased substantially. Also, because the 2RT5R kit provides volumetric lighting, the space feels larger, more open and airy. We are very impressed with the performance of this product. 

In addition to the 2x4 cool white kit pictured here, the Relight system is also available in a 2x2 size, with high output lamps, with 3500K color temperature lamps, or with a battery backup. Warm White vs. Cool White Color Temperature
We frequently get asked to explain the difference between light source color temperatures, and we have clear answers that even lighting neophytes will understand. More commonly, however, customers wish to know which color temperature will be best for a particular application. There is no good answer to this, sadly, because it comes down to personal preference, and personal preference really, really varies. We do invite people to visit our lighting lab, where we can demonstrate how color temperatures can impact environment. After a visit to the lab, most customers are able walk away with a clear winner for their particular applications. 

Below are photos of the same four items illuminated by a 2700 Kelvin (warm white) metal halide light source on the left and a 4000 Kelvin (cool white) metal halide light source on the right. Restaurants often choose warm white, while cool white is very popular in office environments.

The program allows us to import CAD files, then place light fixtures in each room, while providing the analysis and visualization tools to make sure it is done right the first time. With this software we can be sure to meet IES standards for light levels and ASHRAE standards for lighting power density. Consider the PAR30 Halogen Replacement

The smallest self-ballasted ceramic metal halide lamp in the industry, the METALARC POWERBALL EL PAR30LN lamp features SYLVANIA's exclusive POWERBALL spherical ceramic arc tube technology, which delivers the utmost in color consistency and stability for color critical applications in a TCLP-compliant product.

We have tested many options for replacing PAR30 halogen light bulbs and have come up with energy efficient and longer-lasting alternatives. I evaluated infrared-conserving halogen light bulbs, LED light bulbs, self-ballasted metal halide light bulbs, and compact fluorescent light bulbs.

Each replacement has its pros and cons, so it's important to understand the limitations of each product while evaluating its benefits. There is no single best solution for all applications, but there are certainly best solutions based on specific applications. For example, the clear winner for retail stores is the self-ballasted metal halide light bulb, specifically the Metalarc Powerball series from Sylvania. These however, would not be suitable in a residential application.

Gotham Architectural CFL Downlights Offer Versatility and Performance

GoodMart now carries the Gotham line of architectural round and square aperture recessed downlights available with various one and two lamp CFL configurations. The AF series for general downlight applications that demand high efficiency and superior optical control feature high performance Bounding Ray optics and premium electric components. Providing optimum light control, popular models include the 8 inch aperture 26W CFL open reflector downlight and the 32W version, both with 120-277V universal ballasts.

For wallwash applications the AFW series features the same great performance but incorporates the Unique "hybrid" wallwash kicker for uniform vertical illumination with light high on the wall and no roomside back-flash.
